What are conscience?
The first time I watched the TV mini-series based on The Stand, it actually seemed rather epic. Having now rewatched it many years later, I can't believe I ever felt that way.
It's bizarre how Stephen King's work often seems to have that effect when translated into movie (or mini-series) format. For example, the televisual incarnations of It, The Stand, and even the less well-known like The Langoliers seem fairly well regarded by people who haven't read the books they're based on. I know people who will defy anyone who suggests that the It mini-series was anything less than stellar. They'll even claim that folks who say the book is better are just snobbish assholes who hate movies.
Snobbish assholes we may be, but It is an extremely flawed piece of TV. Fun, yes, but highly flawed. Sure, Tim Curry is an amazing Pennywise, but he is let down by some extremely hokey effect (LOL CLAYMATION!), and the less said about the ending the better. Seriously, if you haven't read the book, that ending must be the most inexplicably anticlimactic thing since M. Night Shyamalan thought to himself "Hey, a movie about aliens and Mel Gibson? That's a good idea!"
Maybe it's just the undeniable power of the imagination when compared to the restrictions of cinema, but King's novels are in a whole other league when compared to some of the awful adaptations Hollywood has produced. Every so often there's a gem, like Shawshank Redemption, but more often than not his books aren't very well translated. The Shining is something of an anomaly, as I don't consider it a very good King adaptation at all, but it remains a very good Kubrick movie.
Yet still there are countless people who enjoy the movie versions, because perhaps the core idea behind the story remains intact, even if it's not quite so fleshed out as it is in the novels. The idea of an evil clown that murders children is appealing, because it's such a cool and frightening concept. So people enjoy watching a movie about that. Explain to them that the novel is much better, and that it involves a sequence where a number of pre-pubescent boys have very random sex with an equally pre-pubescent girl while lost in a sewer, and you'll probably earn yourself a very bewildered look. And maybe even a restraining order.
I watched the movie version of The Dead Zone the other day. And I'm a big fan of Cronenberg, and King, and Walken, and damn near everybody involved. Yet it just seemed... dull. And slow. And uninspired, and meandering. But I'm sure as hell that it has its own little following of fans who haven't read the book, and who haven't the faintest idea of how it might compare.
This isn't meant as a slight against people who say "That movie was so cool! Why should I bother to read the book?", as I myself was once one of those guys. I thought The Stand was an amazing mini-series that could have possibly been the coolest thing I'd ever seen on the TV. And I distinctly remember Randall Flagg being the most kick-ass villain of all time.
Now I watch it, and I see the hokey effects (no claymation this time though), and the bad ADR, and the low budget sets, and the bad acting, and even Randall Flagg seems to kick a lot less ass. And this is because I've read the books, and I know the characters more intimately, and I'm rather ashamed to see them painted with such broad strokes as they are on film. Yet there was a time in my life when Matt Frewer's Trash Can Man seemed to light up the screen with insane gusto, and Gary Sinise's Stu Redman was as cool as the other side of the pillow. So did the mini-series just suddenly suck after I put down the novel? Of course not.
I don't know where I'm going with this. I'm just rather fascinated by how a guy's perspective can change like that. And I'm somewhat worried that they might film The Dark Tower, and one day somebody will come up to me and say "Those Dark Tower movies are the shizzle! I don't have to read the books!"
Because I'll have to look that person in the eye and kindly inform them that they've forgotten the face of their father. Thankee-sai.
